Global Community Charter School is currently in the process of obtaining authorization as an International Baccalaureate World School. As part of this process, GCCS has implemented the Primary Years Program (PYP or IB PYP). To help families understand the PYP we are introducing a series of informative talks with our PYP Coordinator Amy Brown: Ask Amy.
What is the PYP?
The PYP is an educational program for students aged 3 to 12 managed by the International Baccalaureate (IB) organization. The PYP program is based around 6 transdisciplinary themes:
What does "transdisciplinary" mean?
"Transdisciplinary" means that the PYP curriculum is globally relevant, significant, engaging, challenging, and conceptually based. The cool part about this is that it shows that our curriculum and therefore our students, are internationally aligned with IB PYP students around the world. IB PYP students could effectively attend any IB PYP school in the entire world and be able to meet the standards regardless of the location. We are producing students who can think in a meaningful way and have enduring understandings of content truly worth knowing.
How does GCCS use the transdisciplinary themes?
PYP sets out the 6 transdisciplinary themes as a guide for schools to use in developing their Program of Inquiry (POI). Each grade level moves through these 6 themes throughout the year as well as following the Common Core standards and the PYP Scope and Sequence to guide their practice.
What is your favorite thing about the PYP?
I love the fact that we are teaching our students in a such a meaningful way. I recently heard a quote about "preparing children for jobs that may not even exist yet." So, I believe it is vital that we focus on teaching students how to be THINKERS! This leads me to the other thing I love about PYP which is the learner profile. The fact that PYP is value based is amazing. We will talk more about the attributes of the learner profile next week...stay tuned!

Lo bueno de esto es que nuestro plan de estudios y por lo tanto nuestros estudiantes están alineados a nivel internacional con los estudiantes del IB PYP en todo el mundo. Los estudiantes IB PYP podrían asistir de manera efectiva a cualquier escuela IB PYP en todo el mundo y ser capaces de cumplir con las normas, sin importar el lugar. Cada grado se mueve a través de estos 6 temas a lo largo del año, así como siguiendo los estándares del Common Core y el Alcance y Secuencia del PYP para guiar su práctica.
¿Cuál es su parte favorita del PYP?
Me encanta el hecho de que estamos enseñando a nuestros estudiantes de una manera muy significativa. Hace poco oí una cita sobre "preparar a los niños para hacer trabajos que ni siquiera existen todavía." Por lo tanto, creo que es vital que nos centramos en enseñar a los estudiantes a pensar por ellos mismos. Esto me lleva a la otra cosa que me gusta del PYP, que es el perfil del alumno. El hecho de que PYP se basa en valores es increíble. Vamos a hablar más sobre los atributos del perfil de aprendizaje la próxima semana ... ¡estén atentos!
