Global Community Charter School (GCCS) is proud to be an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, which authorizes us to offer the prestigious Primary Years Program (PYP) to our students. The Primary Years Program is for children aged 3 - 12 and nurtures and develops young students as caring, active participants in a lifelong journey of learning. The PYP framework is a fantastic tool for integrating project-based learning, critical thinking, and complex problem solving across our curriculum.
IB World Schools share a common philosophy — a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that encourages critical and creative thinking.
Our Key Design Elements:
International Baccalaureate (IB) World School: GCCS implements the Primary Years Program framework with fidelity, fully-aligned with New York State Learning Standards.
Two teachers in each classroom: GCCS' co-teaching model provides two teachers in each classroom, with ICT classrooms having at least one teacher certified in special education. The ICT model maximizes the potential for differentiated instruction by allowing for extensive use of small-group instruction.
Full Arts Integration: All students attend art, dance, music and physical education class. The arts are integrated throughout core classes as well, as part of GCCS’ transdisciplinary and project-based learning program. Every student has classes in Science, Media and Spanish in addition to the arts.
Multiple Forms of Evidence: Student progress is measured through multiple forms of evidence, including diagnostic, formative and summative assessments, and in projects, portfolios, and written and oral tasks.
GCCS currently serves more than 400 students in grades K-5. The student body is 28% African-American, 67% Latino, and 5% of mixed ethnicity. Families come from all over Harlem, Washington Heights, and the Bronx to benefit from the free International Baccalaureate education we offer.
88% of GCCS students are eligible for Federal Free & Reduced Lunch, 19% of our students are English Language Learners (ELLs), and 21% are Students with disabilities (SWDs).
For students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), we have Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classrooms at every grade level; children with IEPs learn with their peers. We have two instructors on staff who work in small groups with ELL students. This work is overseen by our Special Education Coordinator in collaboration with our Assistant Chief Academic Officer for Support & Intervention. We welcome all learners!
